Not Sick of It Yet....
I am sure that at some point I will stop adding to this page, but
while the excitement is still here I thought I would add this update page. I hope to add
some pictures of the ponds changing environment as well as pictures of the old and
"new" (see Herbie) inhabitants.

Plant It...
and It Will Grow
As I promised, once the plants grew in I would update a
landscape picture well here it is. (Late July 1999) The Canna flowered nicely, the Water
Hyacinth are spreading and the water lettuce filled in the header pool so much I threw
some in the main pond. The Ivy and Vinca took well and are crawling down and around the
wall. Although you cant see it here the Chocolate Mint in the Header Pool is growing
great, and it tastes good also. |

Build It...
and They will Come
I wanted to add frogs to my pond, so I went out on the
Internet to research and ask advice. The consensus was that I should do tadpoles as they
would return to the pond they grew up in.
Well before I had a chance, this guy showed up. Jordan
(grandson of my friend Norm) named him Herbie. How he got to my pond is beyond me as we
are not anywhere near a wooded area. I figure he had a bus pass. |
Well I guess I was due for some new pictures, at least of the fish. So here they
are, while you look at these take into consideration that I took them after
sunset, with a flash digital camera so the quality is not at its best. More
importantly take note of the number of non-koi fish in the pond. A friend, Ken
started me with 6 of these, the fish did the rest. Ken also brought in 2 new
additions, this time Koi; you'll see them in the pictures. Enjoy.
Five Koi
This is a picture of all 5 Koi. Here
you see Royal and Angel, a Big Blue Koi we call Jordan and two Black and
reds (circled) we call Tiger and Mikala. We adopted Jordan and Mikala
from a friend, Ken who wanted them to have a bigger home. Thanks Ken. |
Size Matters?
This is a picture so you
can see the size of the blue Koi, Jordan, in comparison to Angel and the
comets of the pond.

Royal
Royal is the next biggest Koi, being
very close to the size of Jordan but not quite. Here he is with Midge,
one of the Shubunkins just under his chin on the left. On the right is a
little closer shot but not as good of a picture. |

Keeping things on ice (or under it)!
One of the questions I get a lot this
time of year about the Pond is: What do you do with the fish in the
winter? My answer is always the same: Same thing Nature does. The
pictures below are pictures of the pond as a layer of ice forms over it.
The fish are less active, you do not want to feed them and very soon
(next time it thaws) I will put a large plastic raised crate to the
bottom of the pond. This provides a place for them to hide while there
is no plant life; and thus provides a less disturbed habitat while they
are dormant. I know Nature doesn't provide this crate but her ponds are
a lot bigger than mine so I have to improvise. |

See you in the Spring.
